Food Safety Modernization Act H.R. 875On February 4th Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), along with 39 co-sponsors including Colorado’s own Diana DeGette, proposed the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 (H.R. 875) in response to recent food-borne illness outbreaks across the U.S.. As such, the bill currently stands in both the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Agriculture Committee, and is intended to establish the Food Safety Administration within the Department of Health and Human Services to broadly protect public health as it pertains to the safety and security of our nation’s food supply. While this bill is an important step in ensuring the safety of our food supply, it unfortunately lacks specific exclusions that would limit government regulation to large, corporate food production facilities. In turn, this bill could have adverse ramifications upon small, local and organic farming facilities that are unable to meet regulatory standards put forth in the bill. Beyond that, the bill effectively consolidates all regulatory powers with the federal government and strips the states of any right to stipulate exemptions and exclusions. Sadly, many of our current representatives have most likely not read the verbiage of the bill, and have instead endorsed the bill in the wake of social outrage from lack of regulation. We must hold our elected officials responsible and ask that they read, in its entirety, H.R. 875. and ensure the safety and longevity of our local farmers. American Clean Energy & Security Act of 2009Congress is discussing the American Clean Energy & Security Act (ACES), and they need to know that we are demanding BOLD and JUST climate legislation. This Act is THE most important environmental ACT in decades, and will set the tone for investment in clean and renewable energy, the development of a national smart grid, setting aggressive limits to CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, create regulatory framework for carbon taxing and/or trading, and international climate negotiations to be carried out in Copenhagen this December. Call Congress TODAY and demand a clean and just energy economy:Here are a couple of simple steps:
